Payson, Arizona’s night sky is a spectacular scene, sprinkled with an abundance of glittering stars, planets, and nebulae. Everyone says “WOW!” when they look through the telescope or lay out under the stars.

Payson is at an elevation of just over 5,000 feet and boasts clear skies and crisp air. These conditions make it the perfect place for stargazing! Many of the constellations like Andromeda, Scorpius, the Big Dipper as well as many of the planets – Mars, Saturn, Venus, and others await your gaze!

Dark Skies Mean Brighter Stars!

Payson has a dark sky ordinance and unlike larger cities where lights make it difficult to see the stars, Payson doesn’t have that problem.

While taking in all of the mountain activities that exist in Arizona’s Rim Country, you may want to think about making a short trip to Flagstaff and visit the Lowell Observatory. The mission of Lowell Observatory is to pursue the study of astronomy, especially the study of our solar system and its evolution; to conduct pure research in astronomical phenomena; and to maintain quality public education and outreach programs to bring the results of astronomical research to the public.
