Other Points of Interest

Payson and the Rim Country are an explorer’s paradise.  Complete with outdoor recreation that is rivaled by very few tourist destinations, Payson has something for everyone.  Below you will find links to several other points of interest that should definitely be on your list of things to do when you come to visit Payson.

Before you plan your trip,

be sure to check for forest closures and restrictions from the Tonto National Forest Service.

Hike up to Railroad Tunnel

Back in the early 1880s, railroad entrepreneurs came up with a plan to transport the rich silver ore from Globe up to the newly opened Atlantic and Pacific line in Flagstaff.  One slight problem: the route would have to cross the rugged Mogollon Rim.  Plans to conquer the Mogollon Rim by the railroad reached the end of the line 70 feet inside this tunnel.

Take Photos with the Murals

Sprinkled around town and specifically down Main Street are amazing murals and pieces of artwork created by local artists and students. Keep an eye out for colorful wildlife on Westerly and a vintage photo on Sawmill Theater. Be sure to share your photos on Instagram with the hashtag #adventurepayson!

Visit Tonto Natural Bridge

Driving north on Highway 87, just before the community of Pine, is the Tonto Natural Bridge. The park has four hiking trails. Several stairs lead you to the area under the natural bridge where you can walk the slippery rocks into the enormous cavern. This state park  is a must-see in Rim Country!

Enjoy the Natural Springs at Fossil Creek

Expansive cottonwoods and other trees provide a canopy of shade over Fossil Creek near Strawberry.  Fossil Creek may harbor the finest set of natural springs in Arizona. They pump thousands of gallons of crystal-clear, 72-degree water every minute, water that now flows unrestricted 14 miles into the Verde River.

Visit the Zane Grey Museum

“My beloved Arizona” was the term of endearment Zane Grey bestowed upon this state. Its history and people inspired his western novels. Visit an iconic replication of his Arizona cabin at the Rim Country Museum located at Green Valley Park. Be sure to check the business hours before you plan your adventure.

Visit the Strawberry Schoolhouse

Built in 1884, the Strawberry Schoolhouse is an amazing ode to the area’s history and the groups that came together to build a school for the area’s children in the nineteenth century. Click the button below for more information including tours.
